Dear Mr. Tim Cook,

I write you today to categorically demand Apple to ensure decent working conditions at Apple suppliers.

Since several months Apple is confronted with an escalating criticism about the violation of workers’ rights at its suppliers. In January, The New York Times published articles to denounce once again the harsh working conditions at Apple suppliers. The findings of the journalists confirm the investigations done by SACOM. Involuntary labour, exposure to hazardous environments, harsh management methods, excessive and forced overtime and low wages are systematic violations of workers rights. This is not extraordinary as Apple’s supplier responsibility reports, in many cases report the same abuses. What is, however, interesting are the revealing remarks of some insiders which underline the relevancy of the demands of the workers and SACOM and supported by achACT, the Belgian member of Goodelectronics network, and MakeITFair.

I’m greatly disconcerted by the inhumane working conditions at Apple suppliers. With all its success in the global marketplace, Apple undoubtedly has ability to improve its purchasing practices ensuring fair prices and well-planned lead times. This will enable suppliers to take necessary safety measures and to pay a living wage, allowing workers to work normal hours.

More precisely, I strongly demand to Apple to publicly and concretely responds to the five demands of the SACOM to :

1. End the use of student worker;

2. Provide a living wage for all the workers so they do not have to work excessive overtime hours;

3. Conduct labour rights training for workers, including training on occupational health and safety;

4. Facilitate the formation of a genuine trade union through democratic election;

5. Compensate the victims if there is non-compliance with the Apple code of conduct.

Finally, I call upon Apple to be more transparent about its supplier and engage with labour rights organizations to make sure that working conditions improve.

I look forward to hearing from you

Yours Sincerely,
